This journey explores finest monasteries of Ladakh and two prominent corners of civilization and natural beauty, named Lamayuru and Tsemoriri Lake. Lamayuru is on the way to Kargil. According to the legend many years ago there was a big lake filling valley. Great Indian Buddhist yogi, Mahasiddha Naropa dries up this lake and strange, sediment rock formation appeared. He also founded Lamayuru Monastery. The oldest surviving building at Lamayuru is a temple called Seng-ge-Sgang, at the southern end of the Lamayuru rock, which is attributed to the famous builder-monk Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055 CE). Rinchen Zangpo was charged by the king of Ladakh to build 108 Gompas, and certainly many Gompas in Ladakh, Spiti and the surrounding regions, date from his time.
Tsemoriri Lake, another masterpiece of nature in Ladakh’s Changthang Region is situated at an altitude of 4,595 Meters and it is the largest of the high altitude lakes in the Trans-Himalayan biogeography region, entirely within India. The lake was a source of salt for local people until 1959. The lake is surrounded by the elevated valley of Rupshu with hills rising to 6,000 m (20,000 ft). “Changpas", the nomadic migratory shepherds (pastoral community) of yak, ship, goat and horses of Tibetan origin and who are engaged in trade and work on caravans in Ladakh region, are the main inhabitants of the area. You may encounter Changpas and wild Tibetan ass during your trip.
