Mt. Satopanth, situated in Garwhal Himalaya, is technically moderate with a complex glacier approach, followed by easy angled snow slopes interspersed with knife edge ridges. Mt. Satopanth is the second highest summit in the Gangotri Group located in the remote Garwhal Himalaya Range separating the Gangotri and Chaturangi Glaciers. This is an incredibly beautiful point to view peaks of Thalay Sagar, Shivling and the terrifying granite pillars of Bhagirathi III. Gaumukh, the mouth of the holy Ganges River, known as the most holy place in all of India, is very close to Gangotri make this expedition more than just a climb, it is a cultural experience unmatched anywhere in the world.
From a base camp at Vasuki Tal (4850m), a further three camps will be established on the mountain prior to the summit bid. After approximately three weeks on the mountain the expedition will return to Gangotri and then back home.
Route details and general observation
The route on the glacier to camp 1 (5400m) changes every year and may require the use of fixed ropes and ladders to ensure safety as loads are ferried up the mountain. Easy angled snow slopes lead up to Camp 2 at 6000m. The initially broad ridge becomes narrow for approximately 300m before merging with the final summit slopes. Depending on conditions, parts of the ridge may need to be fixed (300m of difficulties.

Before you book any climbing expedition
Majority of our climbing expeditions go from 6000 to 8000 meters height. These expeditions are generally very challenging and strenuous. Just due to its height alone there are certain risks involved. It is again a fact that during last almost two decades we have remarkably gained experience in minimizing the risk factors, making innovations in food and other facilities but majority of our experiences restrict till base camp. Most of our climbing clients till date remained seasoned climbers but still we appeal to the participants to understand risk of mountains, their individual experience of climbing and physical fitness. The participants must be able to move independently and confidently on snow, ice and rock. They are expected to render active support in the mountain, show best team work and tolerance during the expedition. It is important that everyone is able to recognize their limits on the mountain and is prepared to retreat if necessary. The success of the expedition is the responsibility of the participants. We don’t send mountain summit leader for all peaks so the foreign expedition leader is responsible for the group as a whole after base camp. We expect everyone must be willing to accept the orders and decisions of the expedition leader taken in the interest of the group. Improvisations may be done wherever found necessary and alterations to the programme may also occur. Adventure India as a ground handling company refuses any liability for accidents, damages or loss of equipment.

Day 1: Arrive Delhi
Day 2: Administrative work in Delhi (Indian regulations), cargo handling, IMF briefing and purchasing etc. If you don’t have anything in Cargo, then we spend this time in some vibrant sightseeing of Delhi, but visit to IMF (Indian Mountaineering Foundation) is important for briefing. Overnight Delhi hotel
Day 3: Delhi–Haridwar–Rishikesh- we offer you a train journey from Delhi to Haridwar this day and later transfer to Rishikesh which is just close by. Haridwar and Rishikesh are two most sacred places of Hindu religion where the presence of holy River Ganges makes this land ancient, important and spiritually rich. Still if you don’t wish to experience the train journey, we have option to travel by road. Visit to Ganges banks, temples and later check into hotel in Rishikesh.
Day 4: Rishikesh–Uttarkashi/ 151 Kms- Morning we start journey on a well-built road across the first pass (1600m) to the provincial capital of Tehri. We prefer to start early so government formalities can be completed at Uttarkashi concerning permits and wild life security deposits. In the evening we stroll in the market to have real experience of this mountain destination and launching place of several high peaks.
Day 5: Uttarkashi–Gangotri (3046m) – We still have few hours to reach deep inside the valley from where we would start our trekking towards the BC. It would take about 5-6 hours to reach Gangotri through narrow, sometimes exposed mountain road and thus arrive in the pilgrim village of Gangotri at the Bhagirathi River. Above some kilometers is the place from where this holy river originates and has extremely high religious value. This is the land of hundreds of sages and saints who can never be separated from the Himalayas. For the overnight, we stay in a guest house nicely maintained.
Day 6–08: Gangotri (3050m) – Bhojbasa (3790m) – Tapovan (4405 m) - Nandanvan (4500m)–Base camp Vasuki Tal (4850m)- The first days trek to Bhojbasa moves whole the way along with roaring but beautiful Bhagirathi river and we get the excellent view of Bhagirathi group of peaks. The climb to Tapovan is steep but the surroundings are breathtaking. Tapovan is known for its meadows that encircle the base of Mount Shivling (popularly known as Indian Matterhorn). The trek of next morning takes us to glaciers and crevasses before we reach nice campsite of Nandanvan. From Nandanvan next day we climb on the ridge north of Nandanvan and after 2 hours Vasuki Glacier flowing South-North and merging to Chaturangi glacier flowing East-West is visible. We further trek and reach Vasuki Tal (Tal means Lake) in front of which is the Vasuki peak, said to be like multiple-headed Vasuki Serpent in Hindu mythology. Gangotari to Tapovan, we offer best two men tents, all meals, some refreshments, separate kitchen and dining area. The porters, LO and guides will also travel with us, off course at a technical distance so the crowd doesn’t spoil heavenly mountain solitude and deep inner experiences.
Day 09: Full day we spend in establishing base camp, sorting out the loads and briefing porters and staff.
Day 10- Day 24: Ascent of Satopanth- that includes set up of Camp I at about 5400 m and from here we can see our destination- the ridge of Satopant. We would establish Camp II at around 6000 meters, carrying equipment and simultaneously acclimatizing too will be done. During the ascent, we have a panoramic view on the Bhagirathi group and great, wild summits such as the Vasuki Peak. We need fixed ropes for the Camp II and later at about 6500 m height would be the Camp III where we observe crevasses and good length of ropes may require. One fine morning from here we will set out for the ascent of the highest point of the Satopanth, which is renowned as one of the greatest and highest viewpoints of the Indian Himalaya.
Day 25, 26 & 27 : Reach back to BC and then to Gangotari and later drive to Rishikesh following the same route.
