Sir Louis Dane, who was an English officer during the British rule in India, has reached Kullu Valley in 1880. He got married in 1882 and then took her wife also to the valley who was equally good mountaineer. It was Sir Louis Dane, who first discovered this high pass trek of PIN PARVATI in 1884 as entry point to Spiti from Kullu valley. It is a very difficult pass not only because it lies very high and remains under heavy snow for most of the year, but also because it involves good know how of technical trekking. A well experienced guide is needed on this trek.
This pass links Parvati Valley in Kullu with Pin Valley of Spiti. Hence it derives the name Pin Parvati Pass.
Route & general observations
The trek starts few miles ahead of Manikaran which is the place of boiling hot sulpher water and a scared place for Sikh Religion with several religious connection in the entire valley up till Mantalai. This place is approached from Kullu in one hour and has an old and big Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) too.
The charm of this trek lies in its challenging nature and it takes one to the barren Spiti valley which is a less explored area with high Buddhist practices in its thousands of years monasteries situated in all corners of the valley. Spiti is extremely less populated region which remained a place of Tibetan Spiritual leaders in ancient period. Pin is the only green valley in Spiti with almost a 900 years old monastery at Kungri, Tabo is entry point through Kinnaur which again has more than 1000 years old monastery and towards Lahoul, the valley has cluster of monasteries including another 1000 years old monastery at Kee.
Best time to Trek is May, June and September and the maximum altitude gained in the trek is 5219 meters.

You will find the cars waiting for you to take to Kullu Valley. It is about 250 Kms and takes 7 hours to reach.
Day 3: Kullu to Pulga/ Barsheni Camp: We start late this day from the hotel. Your Kullu hotel is situated at the river bed of Beas and offers the best comfortable staying experience in the valley. You relax and drive to Manikaran for one hour and can stop there for some time before you leave for the last point connected by road. The drive moves through forests and on the one hand Parvati River flows under high peaks in all corners. The camp is established in beautiful grassland, fairly supportive to relax and enjoy the Himalayan Mountains.
Day 04: Barsheni/ Pulga to Kheer Ganga (2900m-) 7hrs: We start early as it is a long gradual walk to Kheer Ganga this day. The last stretch of the trek includes a long ascent but its charming because it involves a walk through a pine forest and a gorgeous waterfall. There are few interesting stories related to Kheer Ganga and mainly has relation with the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev. You can have dip in hot sulphur water nearby the camp.
Day 05: Kheer Ganga to Tundbhuj (3500m) 6-7hrs: There are two trails from this point and we take the lower one, which goes through fields of wild flowers. There are some Gaddi shepherd encampments and this will be last human settlement you will be watching.
Day 06: Tundbhuj -Thakur Kuan 4-5 hrs: Morning start walking to the next camp through rocks and dense vegetation. Kuan means a well in local language.
Day 07: Thakur Kuan -Mantalai Lake (4070m) -7hrs: There is a natural bridge and is known as Pandu Bridge. Trail makes some ups and downs and then goes through flowered meadows. To reach Mantakal Lake, it is 200m of steep ascending over boulders which may not be tough for people who had some experience but first timer may find learning lessons.
Day 08: Mantalai to high camp (4700m)- 7hrs: In bigger climbing expeditions-even experienced climbers had been seen loosing their 'way through'. So, this type of walking in high altitude is must to learn for people who love Himalayan treks. The day is strenuous and the rocks need to be very careful while climbing up. The place where we establish our camp is called as high camp.
Day 09: High camp to Pin Parvati pass (5219m) base camp -7 hrs: From high camp, steep 300m climb to a snowfield and then a small col is way to cross this legendary pass. Pin Parvati Pass is marked by cairns and prayer flags. Descending is gradual to the next side base of the Pin Valley.
Day 10: Base- Pin valley to Mud: The pin valley is at its best throughout the year. Changing color of the mountain is unique; the evening sunlight makes the surroundings even more beautiful. Reach the small picturesque village of Mud from where another train leads one to Kinnaur through Bhaba Pass. This small hamlet which has been watching trekkers to both sides has developed small shops with local dishes and some noodles and small units for accommodation with basic amenities.
Day 11: Mud to Guling (3000m) 4hrs and drive to Tabo- 2 hours: Although Mud is connected by road but you will enjoy walking as the valley offers too much to see and explore. The high mountains, streams and rivers, small villages (small village in Spiti means 6-7 houses) make this walk extremely meaningful. This is a pleasant walk gradual in the beginning and then a small ascend for about an hour to the village of Sagnam and later reached at Guling. We end our trek here and take pre organized vehicle and reach monastery of Kungri first in Pin Valley, which is the main centre of Nyingmapa sect in Spiti. After the visit, we drive for an hour to Tabo and check into a comfortable hotel.
Day 12: Explore Tabo (3550m) and drive to Kaza through Dankhar Monastery: The Tabo Gompa was founded in 996A.D, which has exquisite frescoes and stucco statues and is often called the Ajanta of the Himalayas. The Chos Khor of Tabo (group of temples) has remained a center of learning Buddhism for centuries and among the one made by Rinchen Zangpo. Later we drive to Dankhar, another ancient monastery and a capital of Spiti king of past is incredibly situated on a hill top perched high on the barren rocky mountain slopes. After this we drive to Kaza- the headquarters of Spiti Valley and check in to hotel.
Day 13: Excursion of Kee, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim and Komic monasteries: All these monasteries of Spiti Valley are almost in one direction, closely situated around Kaza. Just 7 Kms is the 1000 years old monastery of Kee which is the largest monastery of the valley and in a way several decisions are made from this monastery concerning religious issue in the valley. From here, Kibber is another 5 Kms and after exploring Kibber Village and monastery, we drive another 10 Kms to Hikkim and then to the Mahakala Monastery of Komic. The snowcapped mountain peaks do travel with us throughout and create great views. Drive back to hotel in Kaza.
Day 14: Kaza to Manali (195km)- 11 hrs: The drive is long, although the distance is not very long but the terrain makes it difficult. Kaza to Losar, the last village at the distance of 62 Kms is a nice journey through small villages and narrow valley, which is the home of Ibex. After Losar, we start taking height and reach to mighty Kunzam La pass at 4550 meters. The views of CB ranges and peaks are superb from the top and then we descend to Batal which is a temporary settlement to cater people on this route and the trekkers to Chandertal. You can have your lunch here and continue driving along the River Chandera to Chatru, the last point of Spiti valley and then drive to Gramphu and further climb up to Rohtang La pass. From Rohtang, you find a change from the barren landscape of Spiti to lush green valley of Manali. 51 Kms from the pass is Manali where we reach and check in to our hotel.
Day 15: Manali and Naggar sightseeing/ relaxed day: We start by noon to Naggar, the ancient capital of Kullu Valley and presently a heritage village with Roerich Art Gallery and castle to see. The Castle which is situated at the top, has a restaurant from where the entire Kullu valley is visible. Lunch with this fantastic vies is always appreciated at Castle and later we drive back to Manali.
