Pangong Tso Lake is 134 Kms long and extends from India to Tibet, where 60% of the length of the lake lies in China. The lake is 5 Kms wide at its broadest point. Pangong Tso can be reached in a five-hour drive from Leh, most of it on a rough and dramatic mountain road. The road crosses the villages of Shey and Gya and traverses the Changla Pass, where army sentries and a small teahouse greet visitors. Road down from Changla Pass leads through Tangste and other smaller villages. The spectacular lakeside is open during the tourist season, from May to September.
An Inner Line Permit is required to visit the lake as it lies on the Sino-Indian Line of Actual Control.
The second attraction of this trip is Nubra Valley- its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers. The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. Nubra is a high altitude cold desert and villages are irrigated and fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard and a variety of fruits and nuts, including blood apples, walnuts, apricots and even a few almond trees. In the western or lowest altitude end of Nubra Valley near the Line of Control i.e. the Indo-Pak border, along the Shyok River, the inhabitants are Balti or Gilgit Baltistan, who speak Balti, and are Muslims.
Famous Siachin Glacier lies to the north of the valley. Previously there was much trade passing through the area with western China and Central Asia. Diskit, is home to the dramatically positioned Diskit Monastery and Hundar was the capital of the erstwhile Nubra kingdom in the 17th century, and is home to the Chamba Gompa. Between Hundar and Diskit lie several kilometers of sand dunes, and (two-humped) Bactrian Camel graze in the neighboring "forests" of seabuckthorn. The beautiful village of Baigdandu is also located in this area. There is a marked presence of people with startling blue eyes, auburn hair and rosy cheeks as against the typical mongoloid features of the Ladakhis. Local lore has it that they were a Greek tribe who came in search of Jesus Christ's tomb and eventually settled here. Baigdandu is also known for the goats that give you the famous Pashmina shawls.
With these two wonderful sites, this trip takes one to the spectacular monasteries of Ladakh and the Leh market.
