The twin peaks of Nun (7,135m) and Kun (7,077m) dominate the Suru Valley and are highest peaks in the Zanskar Himalaya of Northern India. Due to quick access from Leh to base camp and the ease with which a climbing permit can now be obtained, we are inviting climbers for an expedition to the more challenging and interesting of the two summits, Nun.
The expedition takes one to the most rewarding destination of western Himalayas, Ladakh and further towards to Kargil region. Leh is the place where we will be reaching from Delhi by air and starting our trekking from Heniskut over Kanji La, which means reaching base of Mt. Nun with good acclimatized body and mind.
Route details and general observation
There will be three camps after the BC and the distances between these camps are quite long. Advance Base Camp (ABC), which is referred by Jagged Globe, would be located at 4,750m. It is approached over rocky moraine, with ABC itself sited on flat, sandy moraine. From here, easy-angled snow slopes are followed up towards the West Ridge, where an icefall needs to be negotiated to get established on the ridge. Camp 1 is reached by climbing on snow slopes of 50 to 55 degrees and will be placed at 5,950m. Camp 2 will be placed between 6,500m and 6,680m higher on the ridge. Above Camp 3 there are sections of mixed rock and ice and snow and ice up to 70 degrees.

Day 01: Arrive Delhi Overnight Delhi hotel.
Day 02: Administrative work in Delhi (Indian regulations), cargo handling, IMF briefing and purchasing etc. Overnight Delhi hotel.
Day 03: Morning a spectacular one hour flight to Leh: On arrival, you will be meeting our local office and expedition guide who will shift you to the hotel. Full day to relax and explore the local life in the evening for some time, overnight at Leh Hotel.
Day 04: Full day sightseeing of Leh and its monasteries like Shey, Thiksey and Hemis.
Day 05: Drive to Heniskut and begin trek to Kanji Village: Morning we start driving to Heniskut with our expedition guide and LO. On the way we have good opportunity to visit one of the oldest monasteries of Ladakh, Lamayuru. The drive to Kanji Village is an adventure in itself, firstly along the main highway from Leh to Kashmir, with the option of visiting Alchi Monastery also on the way, before turning off for the last 10Km through a spectacular gorge. From Heniskut, we start trekking to Kanji which takes 4-5 hours by crossing a bridge on Kanji stream, Kanji is a small village of about 18-20 houses which has a small monastery too. We cross the village and at the outskirts camp for the night.
Why this trek of Kanji La Pass?
We need to know that Tangol and Guimatongo are two nearest road heads to approach NUN and KUN base camps. Tangol is 70 Kms and Guimatongo is 110 Kms from Kargil and from both the places the base camp of Nun Kun massif is only one days trek.
So technically, instead of driving directly to Nun, we design a three day trek over the Kanji La (5,280m), partly for the acclimatization, but also for the opportunity to explore a little of this fascinating region.
Day 06: Trek to base of Kanji La/ 7 hours: From Kanji Village we trek up the floor of the valley, passing fields and seasonal settlements, crossing the river to a grassy camp site in an easy and comfortable 7 hours time. Overnight at Camp.
Day 07: Cross Kanji La (5,280m) and camp/ 8 hours: We leave the camp in the morning and break off the main trail heading steeply up the valley side to a pass at 4,600m. We then carry on up a side valley to some final steep slopes which take us to the pass itself, with wonderful views of the mountains of the Zanskar Ranges. A long descent down barren scree slopes takes us into a narrow gorge, moving through the stream with a final section walking down the riverbed between vertical rock walls. The main river then needs to be waded - carefully and quite impossible in flood - so this route needs to be seriously assessed in unsettled weather. We then pick up the main path to our camp above the river at 4,265m. Overnight at camp.
Day 08: Camp across Kanji La to Tashitongde trek and drive to Tangol: Morning we start trekking down for about 4 hours through pleasant down valley which is remarkably beautiful and brings us to Rangdom Monastery at Kargil to Padum road at about 4,040m. Vehicles take us from here along the spectacular Suru Valley, passing to the north of Nun and Kun, and we reach Tangol in about 4 hours, where we make our overnight camp and meet the porters for next day’s trek towards advance base camp of Nun.
Day 09: Trek to Nun and Kun Base Camp (4,115m)/ 6-7 hours: Morning we leave the village and fields of Tangol, and take the path that climbs steeply into a hanging valley and the site of Base Camp at around 4,200m, it takes about 3 hours of walking from the Tangol campsite. We further move aside of the moraines and glaciers, to the site of Advance Base Camp (ABC), which takes another 3 hours. Nun itself is still not visible from here, but ABC is a fine, comfortable site overlooked by high peaks. Overnight at camp.
Day 10- 25: Ascent of Nun via the West Ridge by establishing advance camps: We need to establish three camps on the mountain and fix ropes on various sections of the route. The climbing is never technically difficult, but involves steep snow and ice slopes, negotiating crevasses and steep and exposed loose rock and scree. The HAPs will do the bulk of load carrying and fixing, but each member of the team needs to be prepared to carry their own share of the kit and be able to manage to move independently on the fixed ropes. The route to Camp 1 is first up a moraine and scree slope and ridge for one hour, then onto the glacier and up an icefall with 200m of fixed line, which gives access to a huge glacial plateau. At last we have a view of our mountain and in this process, we spend 4-5 hours of the morning session. Camp 1, at 5,500m, is established on this plateau. The route from here goes across to the base of the mountain and the start of 600 vertical meters of almost continuous fixed ropes to the site of Camp 2. First up steep snow and ice slopes, then over rock and scree, then more snow and ice, again taking around 6 hours. Camp 2, at 6,100m, is squeezed onto a narrow sloping shelf between a glacial ridge and a vertical drop of a very long way. Above Camp 2, a short scramble takes us onto the rocky summit of a subsidiary peak, with a steep snow slope down the other side to a crevassed col. The col. gives access to snow and ice slopes, which have one short section of fixed rope and lead to the plateau at around 6,400 meters below the final summit peak of Nun. Camp 3 is put on this open area, giving access to the final summit. (Ref. J Globe & previous climbers)
Day 26-28 Return to Leh/ Trek from ABC to Tangol takes about 4 hours and further drive to Kargil takes 3- 4 hours. From Kargil, it takes 7 hours to reach Leh.
