This classic trek that retraces the pioneering steps of Shipton and Tilman through the Himalayas.
The centerpiece of the Garwhal region is undoubtedly the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Until 1934, the gorge of the Rishiganga River and the immediate area around Nanda Devi peak was one of the least known and most inaccessible parts of the Himalayan region. In the Sanctuary, the mountains stand in a vast amphitheatre, seventy miles in circumference and about 6,000m high. The Nanda Devi Sanctuary is drained in part, by the Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers.
It was in 1934 when Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman eventually managed to find their way to the Sanctuary, which was unexplored till then. This paved the way for the Anglo-American mountain expedition of 1936 to ultimately climb the peak. When Tilman and Odell reached the top of Nanda Devi on 29th August 1936, they had reached the highest point ever climbed by man till then. And this height record stood till the French stood on top of Annapurna in Nepal in 1950 - the first 8,000m peak to be climbed by man.
Route & general observation
From Delhi, overnight train to Kathgodam is better option than thinking of driving to Almora, which is a nice hill resort. Munsyari and Lilam are another places to explore while one is finally on the strenuous high altitude trekking of Milam and then Nanda Devi base camp.
View of the Mt. Nanda Devi could be one of the most fascinating and beautiful experience in the world for every nature lover. Nanda Devi is the highest mountain situated completely within India and is surrounded by a ridge wall of nearly 6000m. The only break in this wall is the Rishi Ganga, a wild and seemingly impenetrable gorge. The Nanda Devi basin must surely be one of the most legendary regions in the entire Himalayas chain. During the trek there are many views of the surrounding peaks and the Kuari Pass (3658m) itself has an unrivalled panorama of the Great Himalayas peaks including Nanda Devi (7816m), Changabang (6864m), Dunagiri (7066m) and Kamet (7756m).
