Kedar Dome (6831 M) is a mountain peak in the Gangotri Group of peaks in the western Garwhal Himalaya. Kedar Dome lies on a spur projecting towards the Gangotri glacier, two kilometers northwest of Kedarnath. It is located in the state of Uttrakhand 15 kilometers south of the holy site of Gaumukh- the source of the Bhagirathi River. Kedarnath is the highest peak on the south side of the Gangotri Glacier, and Kedar Dome is the third highest. Both peaks have relatively easy routes on their northwest sides, but the east face of Kedar Dome is a large, very difficult rock climb. We reach to Rishikesh and further to Gangotri from where we trek to Tapovan. Kedar Dome Base Camp is called Khara Patthar and is located at 16,000 feet. The trek is not long and the elevation gain is not great, but the air becomes noticeably thinner. Kedarnath and Kedar Dome were first climbed together, in 1947, by a Swiss team led by André Roch. Their route on Kedar Dome, the northwest flank, is still the standard route; it is straightforward and relatively low-angle, and is a popular ski ascent in the spring season.
Route details and general observation Our objective is to climb Kedar Dome. At 22,402 feet, it is a peak also flanked by huge walls, although on its Northwest flank lies a route of moderate difficulty and makes for a fantastically scenic route. We will then continue deep into the mountains past the headwaters and up onto the enormous Gangotri Glacier. The mountains have so thoroughly inspired the people of this region that many of the peaks have been named after Hindu gods, including Shivling, the Bhagirathi peaks and Kedar Dome. Kedar is in reference to the head of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction.

Day 03: Drive to Rishikesh, Rishikesh exudes a distinct mysticism and spirituality. Known in mythology as the abode of Shiva and the place where Ram observed penance for killing Ravana, the place holds importance for all Hindus. It is believed that meditating in this ‘World Yoga Capital’ brings one closer to attaining salvation. Gateway to the Himalayas, Rishikesh abounds in natural beauty as the mighty Ganga flows majestically past lush green hills. Take a tour around this quiet town and let yourself be soaked in its beauty and tranquility. Lakshman Jhula: A landmark in the town, it is a suspension bridge across the Ganga. According to a legend the bridge was built of jute ropes by Lakshman, hence the name Lakshman Jhula. Enjoy spectacular views of the holy river that flows beneath it as well as the striking mountains which lie in the backdrop. A favorite pastime for tourists visiting Lakshman Jhula is feeding the fish in the river. Triveni Ghat: This is the main bathing ghat in Rishikesh, forever busy with thousands of devotees taking a dip early morning. The ghat derives its name from the belief that that the three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati meet here. The ghat is especially busy in the evenings when the aarti is conducted. The air turns especially sacred when priests offer their prayers and chant mantras to the river. After the aarti, the river gives out a spectacular view as thousands of earthen lamps are set afloat on the river. Overnight Hotel
Day 04: Drive to Uttarkashi, 165 Kms/ 6 hours: The drive between Rishikesh and Uttarkashi is reasonably wide, very smooth and scenic. Narendra Nagar is the first town, 15 Kms beyond Rishikesh. Thereafter, another vital town is Dharasu, about 115 Kms from Rishikesh. This is an important junction because the route to Yamunotri (100 Kms away from Dharasu) bifurcates from here. One gets the first view of Bhagirathi about 10 Kms before Dharasu. We reach Uttarkashi before noon and few hours are spent for the wild life formalities concerning our climb, although our advance party that joins us at Uttarkashi would have completed major formalities. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga (the Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets the River Alaknanda. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glaciers and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.Gangotri is among the most beautiful in the Garwhal districts, with, high above, a snowline that endures year round and below a carpet of forests, superb Himalayan views and all the joys of trekking through God's country. From Chirwasa we trek to Bhojwasa, the entire trail passes through dense forest. At Bhojwasa there is a small temple and a campsite down near the river. Afternoon free to explore the area and to enjoy excellent sunset on Bhagirathi group of peaks. An inspiring panorama unfolds once on the trail including the huge dimensions of the Bhagirathi range as well as Shivling which rises above the source of the Ganges. Back down the valley, Bhrighu Parbat (6041 M ) looms high above Gangotri. The trail gradually ascends above the tree line while juniper bushes are scattered up the otherwise barren hillside.

This is about 3 Kms trek from the Bhojbasa and we have some good time to explore the surroundings before we proceed to Tapovan which we call the second half of the trek, it is steep and as we climb, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer. Tapovan is known for its beautiful meadows that encircle the base camp of the Shivling peak and the bubbling streams, wildflowers and beautiful campsites suddenly invite the trekkers to stop and stay.
