Kareri Lake is a high altitude, shallow, fresh water lake south of the Dhauladhar range approximately 9 km North West of Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. Its surface is 2934 meters above the sea level. Kareri Lake is best known for being a trekking destination in the Dhauladhar Mountains.
Snow melting from the Dhauladhar range serves as the source of the lake and a stream. Since the source is fresh melting snow and the lake is shallow, water visibility is very high and in most place Kareri Lake is named after the nearby GADDI (Shepherds) village of Kareri situated 9 km south east of the lake. Clusters of dense conifers and different kinds of perennial flowers are a rare treat offered by this place.
Route details and general observation Visiting Dharamsala and Mc Leodganj, the seat of His Holiness, The Dalai Lama is completely a charming journey in the Dhauladhar mountains. The Tibetan establishments, that include residence of The Dalai lama, Namgyal Monastery, Tibetan Medical centre, Tibetan Children Village, handicraft centre, Library and a colorful Tibetan market make it a different world to experience, so few call it Little Lhasa. The monks and Tibetan population living at the top of Dharamsala really makes the statement true.
This trek further adds the excitement in your holidays in Dhauladhar while walking to Kareri Lake and Triund. The trek is moderate and offers spectacular Dhauladhar range, rising high above the Punjab plains offers a complete experience to a trekker. We tread on trails linking scared lakes, ancient temples and secluded Hindu villages and camp in verdant alpine meadows set beneath the snow capped backdrop of the Dhauladhar.
