Mayad Nalla is very less popular among regular tourists, apart from few adventures it gets negligible tourist traffic every year. The rainfall during monsoons is very less like Ladakh and Zanskar. During late June, July and August the complete valley covers under various Himalayan Flowers including the rare blue poppy. The trek is highly rewarding for the flora lovers, off course the unique culture and scenic beauty is all-open for the visitors. The valley is flanked on its northeastern side by the Great Himalayan Range, which separates it from the valley of Zanskar. We can see odd shepherd with their flocks of sheep and goat, wild Yak and the observant but elusive marmots. The valley of Mayad is situated right under the great Himalayan range, with huge peaks towering above the valley. The side valleys are often carpeted in alpine flowers. The Kangla pass was formerly used by the Lahouli people as a crossing point into Zanskar and Ladakh. Crystal clear pools of water offer us the chance to swim and rest tired feet.
Our recent Kangla expedition was for Korean Alpine Federation.

Day 02: Delhi to Chandigarh and to Manali: Drive to Manali
Day 03: Full day at leisure and preparations.
Day 04: Manali to Urgos (3300 Mt) over Rohtang La, we reach Lahaul valley and set our camp at Urgos which is the beginning of Miyar glacier. After an early breakfast we drive up to Rohtang La at 3980m. We quickly leave the lush green Kullu Manali valley and enter the rocky terrain of the Lahaul valley following the Chandra Bhaga River. Before Keylong we take a rough jeep track past the town of Udaipur passing several villages against the backdrop of the mountains. The Trilokinath and Shakti temples are frequented by pilgrims during the summer. Continue driving following the Miyar Nala and through this scenic valley to the village of Tingrit marked with chortens (Buddhist stupas) and we camp a little further in pastures near Urgos village - There is a small monastery above the villages. We cross the river by a wooden bridge and pass through terraced fields and pastures camping a little before Urgos village.
Day 05: Urgos to Khanjar (3685m) - 4 to 5hrs. Walk through Urgos and follow the rough jeep track before crossing the Miyar Nala at Chhaling village. Rough road followed by a wide valley climbing gently to the small village of Khanjar. Climb steeply through alpine pastures to camp in a beautiful spot by a stream. Most of the trail gets wonderful because of seasonal flowers and colorful bushes. Khanjar fascinates a trekker with its largely spread flower meadows and it truly deserves to be called as valley of flowers in Western Himalayas. Since now the road goes to this village, we can have almost one free day here for technical planning.
Day 06: Khanjar to Gumba Nala (3840m) - 5 hrs. Shortly after leaving camp, we cross a small river and trek through terraced fields. We climb up a ridge, the top marked by a chorten offering wonderful views. The walk continues through meadows and small lakes to a huge meadow. After crossing the big Gumba nala we continue through meadows up the wide Miyar Nala valley surrounded by peaks all around and camp by a small stream. The trail moves through lush green meadows and paths. Most of the upper parts of Miyar Valley is popular for its different variety of flowers and landscape. Once we move deeper in to the valley, we surely leave the flowery section but the wonderful mountains keep us fascinated all along.
Day 07: Gumba Nala Phalpu (3985m) or Alyas - 5 to 6 hrs. The morning starts with gentle climb from camp we continue through grassy meadows past a shepherd's hut and lake. We hop across several small streams all along rewarded with an amphitheatre view of peaks and glaciers. After lunch we follow it for about 2 hrs to camp. There are several campsites but we continue to the farthest one which is a dry lake bed surrounded by mountains and several glacial lakes, just less than two km from the snout of the Miyar glacier. Alyas is a word used by the shepherds of Lahaul and Chamba for the halt of sheep on the journey in mountains. Alyas so reflects a place where we can spend the night, mostly shepherds make stone huts with or without roof at places called Alyas.
Day 08: Phalpu Alyas to Camp I (4390m) - 7 to 8 hrs. We leave early this day and trek through difficult moraine. The climb continues through snow fields and moraine past glacial lakes to camp in a large snowfield in the middle of the glacier. A long day of about 7 hrs with much rock hopping makes the day trek. Camp is again in a beautiful spot surrounded by snow capped peaks.
Day 09: Camp I to Kang La Base Camp II: The climb is gentle, but due to the crevasses it can take time after mid July. In early summer (from mid June) the crevasses are covered and walking is easier but in late summer the crevasses would be open so it l takes more time to reach camp which is in a field on the glacier with views of the snowcapped peaks and glaciers all around. - 6 - 7 hrs.
Day 10: Base camp II to Cross Kangla Pass & reach other side of pass at camp III: We again start very early in the morning and walk along the middle of the huge snow covered glacier at a gentle incline for about 3 hrs, then rope up. Climb steeply for about an hour until a small summit. We zig zag our way around some crevasses to Kangla Jot pass (5450m). You are rewarded with stupendous views of snow capped peaks and glistening glaciers all around. We descend along the right side of the valley to the river, the junction of 2 valleys where we camp in a small meadow.
Day 11: Camp III to Bardan Gompa: This morning we descend on rocks and scree and follow an easy path by the Tema River through grazing grounds and meadows with flowers. The landscape gets more arid and stunning as you enter the Zanskar valley and the road head - back to civilization .We follow a rough jeep track for 2 km to Bardan Gompa set dramatically atop a riverside cliff, and camp in the school grounds. Bardan Gompa is a Kagyud-pa Gompa famous for its 180-cm high Mani prayer wheel. Shabdru, who also founded Hemis Gompa in Ladakh and later went to Bhutan, founded Bardan Gompa.
Day 12: Burden to Padum: (3650 meters): This day we can reach Padum by cars and rest for the day. Since we are not staying in the hotel so we have to either trek to KARSHA for camping or we will decide at the spot. With the help of local trekkers, we will sort out the location of our climbing ridge at Padum and make necessary preparations.
