The Ship of Desert, camel is not confined to the plains of Arabia or even Rajasthan only but it’s also one of the major modes of transportation in the cold deserts of Ladakh since ancient times. The double back bactarian camel was one of the most reliable modes of transport for habitants of Turk's. Nubra Valley is known as Ldumra (the valley of flowers) which is situated in the north of Leh. The average altitude of the valley is above 10,000 ft. The main attraction in this area is the Bactarian Camels (Shaggy double hump Camel), the sand dunes and monasteries.
Camel Safaris through Ladakh are one of the most memorable experiences possible in the Himalaya with a difference. You’ll soon get used to the rolling and wobbly movements of the camel while exploring fertile and lush apricot orchards, rugged mountain terrains, frozen desserts, and the remote villages of Nubra Valley.
These double-humped Bactrian Camels are used by the Central Asian traders in earlier times as the main mode of transport on the Ladakh-Yarkhand (Turkmenistan) trade route—an offshoot of the famed Silk Road. Today, Bactrian Camels have emerged as a favorite of travelers to meander through Nubra villages like Deskit, Hunder, and Panamic.
