PARANG LA PASS TREK (5450 Meter) SPITI TO CHANGTHANG
Dedicated to Koran Way Expedition

A few years ago, LONELY PLANET included this trek (Kibber to Tsemoriri over Parang La pass) in world’s top 10 trekking routes. In earlier times, the traders of Tibet, Ladakh and Changthang valley used to reach La Darcha fair of Kaza for trade through this route where Changspa nomads came mainly to barter wool and barley in exchange for salt. While trekking on this route we come across several fossils belonging to the Tethys Sea and enjoyed clear views of stunning Mt. Kanamo towering above the landscape.

In 1847, the British botanist Thomas Thomson travelled through Kibber and described it as the last important settlement before crossing Parang La into Ladakh. His observations remain among the earliest detailed European descriptions of this ancient caravan route.

One geographical curiosity that made the route famous is the Pare Chu (Parang River).

The river originates near Parang La, flows from India into Tibet, then turns south before re-entering India and joining the Spiti River—an unusual course that fascinated nineteenth-century geographers. Trekkers follow this river for much of the journey after crossing the pass

Adventure India started trekking expeditions on this route in 1999 and our remarkable expedition to recall on this route was a South Korean Expedition coordinated by Seo Ki Seok.

TREKKING SCALE AS PER THE GLOBAL STANDARDS

To make it convenient to understand the difficulty level of this trek beforehand, we have carefully studied all the popular international standards, including SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) Hiking Scale, Nepal Trekking Grades, UK Scrambling Grades, and Indian standards. Since there is no single world-standard trekking grade like UIAA, SAC T-scale is the closest and most structured globally.

Parang La (5,580 m) is a high-altitude trans-Himalayan traverse graded T4 on the SAC Alpine scale, classed as Strenuous and Difficult due to its prolonged exposure above 4,800 metres, harsh desert-plateau winds, extreme UV, and week-long isolation with virtually no exit points. Unlike Kangla’s glacier-centric challenges, Parang La is defined by psychological endurance with long moraine corridors, cold braided crossings near Tsemoriri, limited shade, and a dry, high-plateau climate that intensifies dehydration and acclimatization stress. Technical glacier use is seasonal and limited, requiring crampons early in the window but rarely rope work, making it an alpine trek rather than a mountaineering ascent. The route demands high-altitude conditioning, reliable navigation, and complete logistical self-sufficiency, as rescue is complex and terrain monotony magnifies fatigue.
