Mt. Shivling (6,543 M) Expedition

37 Days

Shivling is legendary because it has no easy approach and demands full technical commitment on all sides, combines constant rock-ice exposure with volatile weather, stands as a sacred and iconic pyramid dominating the Gaumukh–Tapovan skyline, and remains one of the most photographed and mythologized summits in the Indian Himalaya, a rare fusion of spiritual symbol, elite climb, and perfect alpine aesthetics.

Shivling’s climbing legacy began with the 1974 ITBP first ascent via the still-technical West Ridge, followed by the 1978 British North Pillar attempts and a wave of elite mixed and direct lines through the 1980s–90s and into the modern alpine-style era, collectively establishing it as a mythic Himalayan peak with no easy route, even the standard is advanced.

Shivling’s technical profile consists of steep granite pitches with cracks and chimneys, mixed ice and serac-threatened gullies, knife-edge corniced ridges requiring fixed ropes, crevasse- and avalanche-prone glacier access, high-exposure vertical terrain at 6,500 m with no easy retreat, and protection that relies on cams, nuts, screws, and a hybrid alpine–fixed rope strategy for safety.

Adventure India organized several expeditions to this beautiful peak, but the most impressive was a German Expedition led by Bene. The team was originally preparing for Cerro Kishtwar, but later changed to Mt. Shivling. We humbly dedicate this peak to Bene and his team.
