The Buddha Path traces the spiritual and geographical journey of Gautama Buddha, whose teachings have guided humanity for more than two and a half millennia. After attaining Enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha spent rest of his life travelling across the Gangetic plains of northern India teaching the Dhamma, establishing the Sangha, and inspiring countless followers on the path to liberation. The most sacred sites associated with his life include Lumbini, where he was born; Bodh Gaya, where he attained Enlightenment; Sarnath, where he delivered his first sermon and set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma; and Kushinagar, where he attained Mahaparinirvana.
In designing this journey, we have drawn inspiration from Old Path White Clouds, the celebrated work of the revered Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. Based on extensive Buddhist literature and traditions preserved across many cultures and languages, the book presents a vivid and deeply human account of the Buddha’s life and teachings. Using insights from this remarkable work, we have carefully crafted an itinerary that follows the Buddha’s journey from his departure from the royal palace, through the places where he sought truth, attained Enlightenment, taught his disciples, and ultimately entered Mahaparinirvana at Kushinagar.
This pilgrimage offers a unique opportunity to walk quite literally in the footsteps of the Buddha, connecting with the landscapes, sacred sites, and living traditions that shaped one of the world’s greatest spiritual teachers.
Adventure India first operated this special journey for William Herrera and his fellow travelers, almost twenty years back, following a monastery in Mexico and numerous international pilgrims, scholars, and followers of Buddhism seeking a deeper understanding of the Buddha’s life and teachings.
