Cycle the Ganges Dedicated to Rotary Manchester Group 1997

21 Days 20 Nights

There are few more evocative ways to discover India than from the saddle of a bicycle. This exceptional journey follows the Ganga from the Himalayan foothills to Varanasi, combining leisurely cycling with fine hotels, dedicated support, wildlife, heritage and extraordinary cultural encounters.

Beginning in Delhi, we explore its remarkable Mughal and colonial heritage before travelling by premium train to Haridwar and Rishikesh, where the Ganga becomes the defining presence of the journey. Gentle opening rides allow cyclists to settle into their rhythm beside the river.

Beyond the foothills, the route unfolds across the fertile Gangetic plains, passing through villages, fields, quiet country roads and historic settlements. Cycling offers an intimate glimpse of rural India, with a dedicated support vehicle and experienced team ensuring complete flexibility and comfort throughout.

A memorable pause takes us to Jim Corbett National Park, where bicycles give way to private wildlife safaris and expert naturalists. At Agra, a luxurious rest provides the opportunity to experience the Taj Mahal at sunrise.

Continuing east, we discover Kannauj, famed for its traditional perfumes, before travelling through Uttar Pradesh towards Prayagraj and the sacred Triveni Sangam. The final rides lead to Chunar and Varanasi, where the journey culminates beside the ancient Ganga. Two days in Varanasi offer sunrise boat rides, silk traditions, historic lanes and the mesmerising Ganga Aarti.

Adventure India’s connection with this journey dates to 1997, when we participated in the reconnaissance and subsequently operated the original Cycle the Ganges expedition for a six-member Rotary Manchester group. That first-hand experience of the river, its communities and rural landscapes continue to shape this journey today: travel slowly, discover deeply, and experience India beyond the familiar.
