MARKHA VALLEY TREK – A JOURNEY IN SLOW TOURISM

We offer the Markha Valley Trek under our Slow Tourism programme—an approach to travel that gives guests the time and space to relax, reconnect with nature and experience Ladakh without haste.

Slow Tourism is the opposite of the highly programmed holidays of modern life, where every activity is governed by schedules, timings and checklists. For those who see holidays as an opportunity to rejuvenate, recharge and refresh the body and mind, Slow Tourism offers a welcome escape from routine.

We first introduced this concept in 2007, when we successfully operated a Markha Valley programme for a ladies’ group supported by ARR Vienna.

The trek combines dramatic Himalayan scenery, traditional Ladakhi villages, Buddhist monasteries, high-altitude pastures and the spectacular crossing of Kongmaru La. With generous acclimatization and rest periods, the journey encourages travellers to walk slowly, observe, interact and truly absorb the landscape.

It is not simply a trek: it is an opportunity to slow down, experience deeply and return genuinely refreshed.

TREKKING SCALE AS PER THE GLOBAL STANDARDS

To make it convenient to understand the difficulty level of this trek beforehand, we have carefully studied all the popular international standards, including SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) Hiking Scale, Nepal Trekking Grades, UK Scrambling Grades, and Indian standards. Accordingly, we can the Markha Valley Trek is a non-technical high-altitude trek involving sustained walking, varied mountain terrain and a crossing of Kongmaru La at approximately 5,100–5,200 metres. Grading systems vary internationally; when assessed against commonly used Himalayan and alpine criteria, the trek falls broadly within the Moderate-to-Difficult / Moderate-to-Strenuous range. The principal challenge is altitude rather than technical climbing. Good physical fitness, endurance and proper acclimatization are essential.
