Zanskar Himalayan Tour with Naro Nasjal Festival

14 Days

Naro Nasjal fair at Sani Monastery holds special attraction because of the colorfully attired Lamas who perform the Black Hat Dance which is especially interesting because it consists of the evil and good forces in constant struggle with each other. The festival takes place during the blooming of the Guru Naropa Flower, sometime between the 15th and the 20th of the sixth Tibetan month.

Naropa was born as a Bengali prince named Samantabhadra, (c. 1016–1100), believed to have, displayed exceptional intellectual abilities from an early age. He pursued advanced studies in subjects such as logic, grammar, philosophy, and the arts before joining the renowned Nalanda University, where he rose to become one of its most distinguished Buddhist scholars.

A highlight of the festival is the ceremonial unveiling of the revered statue of Mahasiddha Naropa (c. 1016–1100), the great Indian Buddhist scholar and yogi associated with Nalanda University and one of the most influential masters of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Naropa is especially remembered for transmitting the profound teachings known as the Six Dharmas of Naropa, a central part of Vajrayana Buddhist practice.

Located in the broad plains of the Stod Valley, Sani Monastery belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu school and is widely regarded as one of the oldest religious sites in the Ladakh–Zanskar region.
